James Curb - Homeless Liaison Coordinator, Coeur d'Alene School District |
“I love my job…My soul demands that I do this!” These are the words of a passionate man and, luckily, James Curb is someone who demonstrates a passion for helping families in crisis. He does this through his work as the Homeless Liaison Coordinator (HLC) for the Coeur d’Alene School District, as a board member of Habitat for Humanity, and an enthusiastic member of our county’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness Committee. Whatever ‘hat’ James is wearing at any given time, he is always our HERO! We are fortunate to have him as a resource to FPNI staff and families.
James is a graduate of CDA High School – class of 1986, with a master’s degree from Utah State and post-masters studies in school psychology from the University of Idaho. As the district’s HLC, James is responsible for building programs and finding solutions for homeless children and their families. “We get referrals from any number of sources in the school district,” says James. “These people have taken on the needs of under privileged, including School District administration, counselors, nurses, teachers and staff - all are committed to making sure our students have every opportunity to succeed. . . and stable shelter is vital.”
“A lot of my job is educating the educators and the community to the need and resources available - and bringing them together”, he continues. “It’s unbelievable how well it’s working. Kootenai County’s continuum of care is probably the premier community endeavor in Idaho;. Having (St. Vincent de Paul’s) One-Stop-Shop, Fresh Start, City Councilman Mike Kennedy, the support of the police departments (are key). . . and FPNI fits right in there. Punishing and putting down (families) isn’t the answer. We are not providing a ‘hand out’, but the tools and skills needed to get them into a stable environment and better future.”
“I’m grateful -and the school district is too - for Family Promise,” he continues, “because Family Promise is a safety net when other avenues of shelter are unavailable.”
When asked ‘how could FPNI do better?’, he replies: “I wouldn’t change a thing. What you are doing is so innovative and unique. How grateful I am for Family Promise. It offers that piece of the puzzle that I don’t have to turn anybody away. (Families) can refuse the assistance. But we are never lacking support and shelter because of Family Promise... You guys are making such a difference.”
And so does ‘Our Hero’: James Curb!

United Way’s
Day of Caring
On Thursday, September 17th, the United Way Day of Caring will extend a hand to Family Promise of North Idaho. Each year, United Way of Kootenai County matches up businesses that physically serve non-profits in Kootenai County.
Last year, Bank CDA did an outstanding job of painting and putting the final touches on the men’s and women’s bathrooms. Those rooms went from locker rooms to useful, pleasant lounges.
This year, Bank CDA’s Marilee Renfrew will once again be project manager. Rooms will be painted at Falls Christian Assembly, our Day Center site, where our guests periodically stay overnight. Vents will be put in the office, debris will be picked up around the grounds and we are looking to refurbish the playground equipment. This event really captures the hearts of those who spend the day caring for our families.
Thanks, United Way! We are a PROUD United Way PARTNER! |
